September 25th, as every year, is the National Dental Health Day \u2013 also for us in Cologne. This year’s motto on the topic of periodontitis is: “Healthy starts in the mouth \u2013 Explosive material!”, because millions of Germans and also many of our patients in Cologne are affected by this chronic inflammation of the periodontium. Often without noticing it. <\/p>

Among adults in Germany, around ten million people have a severe periodontal disease. Not only is this large number explosive material. Also, the fact that periodontitis can affect our health far beyond dental health. If bacteria and inflammatory substances get into the bloodstream, they often cause problems in other regions of the body. Medical studies also show that periodontitis can interact with diseases such as diabetes mellitus, rheumatism, chronic respiratory diseases or cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke. <\/p>

WHAT MAKES US VERY POSITIVE IN OUR DENTAL PRACTICE IN COLOGNE: Periodontitis is treatable and even if the number of periodontitis cases is currently high: Thanks to good preventive measures, the trend is declining.<\/p>

“Periodontitis can be treated. Teeth can be preserved into old age through targeted prevention \u2013 so a toothless old age is not an inevitable fate. But this is only possible if there is awareness of this “silent disease”. And if the patients participate and stay on the ball. Prevention means regular oral hygiene, brushing your teeth twice a day, using dental floss or interdental brushes and visiting the practice regularly for prophylaxis and professional teeth cleaning (PZR),” says Prof. Dr. Christoph Benz, President of the German Dental Association (BZ\u00c4K).<\/p>
