Small joint, big impact - Recognize and properly treat temporomandibular joint dysfunctions – with the DIR® SYSTEM
Recognize malfunctions correctly: The DIR® measurement
Studies show that approximately ten percent of all people suffer from the consequences of so-called Craniomandibular Dysfunction (CMD), i.e., a malfunction of the temporomandibular joint. The musculature of our masticatory system is directly connected to the neck and spinal column musculature. Malpositions and functional disorders of the highly complex musculoskeletal system of the jaw can therefore lead to far-reaching disturbances in other areas of the body.
The DIR® system is a reliable measuring technique for determining temporomandibular joint or tooth misalignments. With this computer-aided functional diagnostics, dentistry has a highly accurate instrument at its disposal for recording mandibular movement under a firmly defined chewing pressure. The data from the movement registration are transferred directly to the computer, which displays the data graphically.
The DIR® diagnostic examination
DIR measurement The measurement is based on a high-tech sensor that is placed in the patient’s mouth and digitally records the jaw movements.
The measurement proceeds in detail as follows:
- the patient moves his mandible in various, predetermined directions
- the sensor records everything and saves the results (ACTUAL result)
- conclusions about the type of disorder can be drawn from the measurement result
- the TARGET situation is determined
The DIR® diagnostic examination is completely painless and only takes a few minutes. The computer-aided recording allows the dentist to determine the correct physiological position of the mandible to the maxilla. The optimal bite position can be determined exactly.
Therapy for jaw malfunctions:
The biomechanical DIR® bite splint
The treatment of the jaw misalignment is then usually carried out first with a bite splint, which restores the “correct bite”. With the results of the TARGET situation, which is determined by the DIR® measurement, we manufacture such a splint, which the patient wears to bring the jaw into the new, optimal bite position. Accompanying manual therapy by a physiotherapist is recommended.
In the mundum dental practice, we work closely with the Sips dental laboratory (https://www.sips-dental-labor.de ). Mr. Michael Sips is trained in the field of DIR® https://dir-system.de/en/).
