Dental implants are considered a high-quality and long-term solution for tooth loss. But many people ask themselves: What exactly do dental implants cost?
This question is often unsettling because statutory health insurance companies do not cover the costs of implants. They subsidize the dentures that are attached to the implant. Our article clarifies costs and subsidies and how financing can be structured. The aim is to create clarity and support the decision-making process.
How much does a dental implant cost?
The costs for a dental implant vary greatly. The price depends on several factors.
Material costs: An implant consists of three parts: the screw in the jaw, the connecting piece, and the visible crown. Each component incurs its own costs.
The following additional factors influence the total costs:
- Type of implant system
- Material selection (e.g. titanium or ceramic)
- Effort of the procedure (dentist’s fee)
- Anatomical requirements (e.g. bone augmentation necessary?)
Additional costs are incurred for diagnostics and planning. This includes X-rays, 3D scans, or models of the jaw. These services are also usually to be paid privately.
Bone augmentation: If bone has to be built up additionally, further costs will be added. This service is also not covered by statutory health insurance.
Due to the complexity of the treatment, an exact breakdown of costs is important in individual cases in advance. Individual consultation is necessary to find out the actual costs.
What does the statutory health insurance pay?
The statutory health insurance does not cover the costs for a dental implant. The implantation itself is considered a private service. A rare exception exists only in case of medical necessity, which is, however, strictly checked.
The dentures that are attached to the implant are subsidized by the statutory health insurance. This subsidy is part of the so-called fixed subsidy system. The amount of the subsidy depends on the findings, not on the chosen care.
Example: If a tooth is missing, the fixed subsidy for a bridge is paid – even if an implant is chosen. The difference between the subsidy and the actual costs remains as a personal contribution.
Factors influencing the fixed subsidy:
- Condition of the dentition
- Standard care according to health insurance guidelines
- Maintenance of the bonus booklet
The bonus booklet plays an important role in the subsidies. Anyone who regularly goes for check-ups for five years receives a 70% subsidy on the standard care. After ten years, the subsidy increases to 75%. The evidence must be complete.
Example calculation:
Let’s assume that the costs for a bridge (standard care) are €1,000. The health insurance covers
- without bonus (60%): €600 fixed subsidy
- with 5 years of prevention: €700
- with 10 years of prevention: €750
In case of lower income, the so-called hardship regulation applies. In cases of financial hardship, e.g. in case of low income, an increased subsidy or a complete coverage of the standard care can be granted. The prerequisite is a corresponding proof of income.
Private health insurance and supplementary insurance
Private health insurance companies cover the costs for dental implants in full or in part, depending on the contract. The regulations are individual. There is no uniform obligation to provide benefits as with statutory health insurance companies.
In many tariffs, a fixed amount or a percentage of the costs is covered. Some tariffs also include preparatory measures such as bone augmentation or 3D diagnostics. What is decisive is what is stated in the insurance contract.
Dental supplementary insurance also offers support. They are particularly popular with those with statutory insurance in order to reduce the personal contribution.
Important points when taking out supplementary insurance:
- Waiting periods: Many providers only pay after a waiting period of 6 to 8 months
- Grading: Limitation of the reimbursement amounts in the first years
- Health check: Pre-existing conditions or missing teeth can lead to exclusion
- Scope of services: Some tariffs only cover dentures, others also implants and preliminary treatments
A comparison of the tariffs is worthwhile, especially with planned dentures. It is important to take out the insurance before the start of treatment. A retroactive reimbursement is usually excluded.
Private insurance can usefully supplement the subsidy from the health insurance company. In combination with the fixed subsidy, the personal contribution is significantly reduced.
Financing options for dental implants
Dental implants often cause high costs. Many patients do not want to pay the personal contribution all at once. Financing can help here.
There are two common ways to finance:
1. Medical financial service providers
Specialized companies take over the processing. For example, we work together with “ZA” (Zahnärztliche Abrechnungsgesellschaft AG) as a financial service provider, which organizes the installment payment. Flexible terms can be agreed. With a term of 6 months and a minimum installment of only €25 (higher installments are of course also possible), the installment payment with ZA is even completely interest-free! 2. Private loan from a bank
A classic installment loan can also be used. Advantage: free choice of bank and transparent credit conditions. Disadvantage: higher interest rates with poor creditworthiness.
What should be considered?
- Amount of the monthly installment
- Total costs including possible interest
- Term and special repayment options
- Processing fees and hidden costs
Before financing, a cost comparison is worthwhile. Not every form of financing is suitable for every life situation. If you are unsure, you should seek advice. The consultation can take place with us or a financial service.
This is how dental implant financing becomes plannable – and treatment remains accessible.
Cost planning and consultation in the dental practice
Before an implant treatment, a precise cost planning is crucial. We create a so-called healing and cost plan for this.
This plan contains all the probable services and their costs. It is the basis for the decision of the health insurance company about the subsidy.
On this basis, patients receive a transparent list of dental implant costs. The breakdown enables a realistic assessment of the personal contribution.
In the consultation, the treatment process is discussed. Additional costs such as diagnostics, bone augmentation or laboratory costs are also explained.
Together we check the insurance status. This clarifies whether a supplementary insurance is involved or which reimbursements are possible.
It is also important to discuss possible payment modalities. The question of installment payment or financing can already be clarified in the consultation.
The documentation of the planned measures creates security and is the basis for a well-founded cost comparison with other offers.
An individual consultation reduces uncertainties and facilitates the decision for or against an implant.
Summary
Dental implants are a long-term solution for tooth loss. We at mundum know that the associated costs often represent a hurdle. That is why we attach great importance to transparent advice.
In a personal consultation, we clarify which services the statutory health insurance covers. We explain the fixed subsidy for the dentures and check whether a bonus booklet or a hardship regulation can be taken into account.
In addition, we provide information about the possibilities with private supplementary insurance. If financing is necessary, we offer flexible installment payments – sometimes even interest-free.
Our practice creates an individual healing and cost plan for each treatment. This gives our patients a clear overview of the dental implant costs.
We carry out all implantological measures with modern technology and in close coordination with our in-house master dental technician.
Our goal is to make high-quality implant restorations understandable and affordable.
Feel free to arrange an appointment for a consultation. We advise individually, personally and tailored to your situation.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about dental implant costs

The insurance covers a fixed subsidy for the dentures, not for the implant itself.
If implants are planned in the long term, supplementary insurance can help to significantly reduce the personal contribution.
We work together with „ZA“ (Zahnärztliche Abrechnungsgesellschaft AG) as a financial service provider, which organises the instalment payment. Flexible terms can be agreed.
