Statutory health insurance benefits vs. professional teeth cleaning

Once every six months, your health insurance company covers the costs of the so-called check-up.

This includes:

  • The examination of the condition of teeth and dentures.
  • The examination of the oral mucosa and the tongue.
  • The depth measurement of the gum pockets (Periodontal Screening Index)
    only every 2 years.
  • The removal of tartar – only above the gum line
  • and only once a year.

The preventive examination as a statutory health insurance benefit for those with statutory insurance therefore only includes tartar removal. Discoloration or deposits from coffee, tea or nicotine are not removed.

With professional teeth cleaning in our dental practice in Cologne, your teeth not only gain in aesthetics, but above all in health and longevity.

Professional teeth cleaning includes

  • All benefits of statutory treatment.
  • The complete removal of tartar: Complete removal of all hard deposits, even below the gum line.
  • The complete removal of all soft (color) deposits – for example, from coffee or nicotine – on the entire tooth.
  • The cleaning of the interdental spaces.
  • Polishing with special polishing instruments and pastes. Polishing deprives bacteria and impurities of their grip.
  • Fluoridation to strengthen the tooth.
  • Instructions on domestic dental care for the long-term preservation
    of teeth, dentures and implants.

Questions and Answers

During professional teeth cleaning, all soft and hard deposits (tartar) on the teeth are thoroughly and gently removed. The interdental spaces are cleaned with appropriate aids, consisting of dental floss and interdental brushes. Superficial discoloration on the teeth is removed with a powder-water jet device (Airflow). After polishing, a fluoride gel or fluoride varnish is applied to protect and strengthen the tooth enamel. In addition, you will receive tips on how to optimize your domestic dental care, if required.

During professional teeth cleaning, a complete cleaning of all teeth or tooth surfaces is carried out by a specially trained specialist. During the annual check-up, the teeth and the oral cavity are only examined and tartar is removed in some areas.

On average, professional teeth cleaning in our practice takes between 30 – 60 minutes. However, the scope and thus also the duration of professional teeth cleaning depends, for example, on the number of teeth. The existing (care) condition of the teeth and the overall situation in the oral cavity also influence the scope and duration of professional teeth cleaning.

Professional teeth cleaning is charged per tooth according to the fee schedule for dentists (GOZ). The total costs therefore result, quite individually, from the number of teeth and the treatment effort.

This must be considered and decided on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the tariff, the insurance covers, for example, the costs for professional teeth cleaning up to twice a year.

That depends on the insurance’s catalog of benefits. As a rule, however, private health insurance covers the costs of professional teeth cleaning.

The number of professional teeth cleanings that are useful or necessary each year depends on many factors. These include, for example, general domestic oral hygiene, chronic pre-existing conditions, diabetes, heart disease and medication. On average, our patients have between 2 – 4 prophylaxis appointments per year.

Of course it is! Prophylaxis measures are preventive measures to maintain the tooth bed and dental health. The germ spectrum in the oral cavity is reduced by professional teeth cleaning. The teeth are clean and smooth. This makes it harder for bacteria to attach.

A healthy oral flora has a positive effect on the immune system and general health. Tooth decay and gingivitis / periodontitis can be avoided. The completely cleaned teeth also result in a great feeling in the mouth.
