CMD (Craniomandibular Dysfunction) COLOGNE

Headaches, neck tension, back pain, or tinnitus can originate in the jaw. These complaints are often caused by craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) – a dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint that can affect the entire musculoskeletal system.

At our Zahnarztpraxis mundum in Cologne, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of CMD. Our goal is to restore balance to the temporomandibular joint function and to sustainably relieve muscular tension.

CRANIOMANDIBULAR DYSFUNCTION COLOGNE

Depending on the findings, we manufacture a custom-fitted CMD splint – such as a Michigan splint or DROS splint – that relieves the jaw and corrects improper loading. In addition, targeted physiotherapeutic measures support the relaxation of the masticatory muscles and promote long-term freedom from symptoms.

Precise functional diagnostics and modern bruxism therapy enable us to accurately determine the causes of your complaints and treat them in a targeted manner. In this way, we help you to reduce pain and noticeably improve your quality of life.

SYMPTOMS OF CMD

The most common symptoms that indicate a “bad bite” include:

  • Teeth grinding and lip biting
  • Tension pains in the jaw and face area
  • Neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Tension headaches and migraines
  • Ear pain and ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Spinal and joint problems
  • Sleep disorders and snoring

Treatment procedure

Even the smallest misalignments of the jaw or unevenness of the teeth can lead to headaches, neck, shoulder, or back pain. Such complaints are often signs of CMD, which can be detected and treated with targeted diagnostics. In our dental practice in Cologne, we precisely analyze your temporomandibular joint function and recommend appropriate measures – from an individual CMD splint to a bite splint to accompanying physiotherapy for the jaw. In this way, we can sustainably alleviate your symptoms and restore the natural balance of your jaw.

Questions and Answers

Protection and preservation for tooth substance and temporomandibular joints. With a splint, the chewing system can be relieved and muscle functions can be normalized. A bruxism splint supports the harmonious interaction of temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles and prevents unphysiological tooth contacts due to rubbing and pressing. Consequential damage of bruxism (bruxism) to tooth enamel, periodontium and temporomandibular joint are minimized or, in the best case, prevented with the help of the bite splint.

The DIR® system is a computer-aided dental function diagnostics system with which disturbances in the movement sequence of the temporomandibular joint can be precisely determined. A basis for the analysis of a malfunction is the DIR® measurement.

With the help of the DIR® system, the optimal bite position of the jaw is determined. The measurement results are used to produce a bite splint that the patient will wear for approximately 3 months to bring the teeth into the new bite position.

Disturbances of occlusion (bite) are often due to developmental disorders, accidents, tooth loss or faulty fillings and dentures. But also stress, poor posture, different leg lengths or a pelvic obliquity can be causal. The body can compensate for minor asymmetries and disturbances for a while, but at some point this can lead to tension, malpositions and structural damage.

Very often, those affected are confronted with symptoms such as severe headaches, shoulder and back complaints, tinnitus or even balance problems as well as nocturnal sleep disturbances due to unmistakable snoring. These complaints are summarized under the umbrella term Craniomandibuläre Dysfunction (CMD). It is not only about the static bite, but also about the chewing movements of the jaws, which exert tensile effects on the temples or the neck via ligaments and muscles.

If the causes are more complex or the symptoms already extend beyond the masticatory apparatus, we have been working closely with CMD specialists from other departments for years in diagnostics and therapy. We work together with physiotherapists, oral surgeons, speech therapists, orthopedists, psychotherapists and ENT doctors in order to enable the most comprehensive treatment possible.
